FHM MAGAZINE BAN

AS many of you avid FHM readers will by now know that the Students' Union are currently upholding a ban on FHM. This ban will run for six months when it will then be reviewed.

Many of you may be wondering why the ban is being enforced and are unhappy with this action. However many of you will not know why the ban has been placed, so hopefully this will make the situation a little clearer.

In the issue dated December 2000, there was an article published titled Bring them back to the fold, utter the ultimate man boast - I turned a Lesbian. Upon reading this article, you would realise that it is full of sexist, misogynistic and homophobic remarks. Remarks such as this quote after finding out that her ex cheated on her. 'If you're lucky she will screw you out of spite or revenge' is one of many more ill-founded comments and stereotypical remarks.

Many of you may have taken it as tongue in cheek and had a good laugh, some though, may have believed what the writer of the article was saying. I must stress that we do give you more credit than that, as hopefully people will realise that a person's sexuality cannot be changed by a smooth talking chancer, who thinks he'll get lucky with a lesbian.

The article caused great offence not only to the LGB community but also to some women, due to the derogatory remarks made. Therefore in light of the Equal Opportunities Policy that our Students' Union has in place, it was decided that a ban was necessary.

Although you cannot be stopped from buying the magazine from other outlets, it has been prevented from being sold in our shops.

It is hoped that you will support your Students' Union in this decision, as articles like the one in question should not be acceptable in today's society.

Thank you for your understanding.
