If you think that you've seen this kinda thing before then you're wrong. Cameron Crowe of Jerry Maguire fame has penned and directed a truly original piece of cinema. Almost Famous tells the story of William, played by Patrick Fugit, a 15-year old favorite child who lives with his infuriating and overpowering mother played brilliantly by Francis McDormand. It is the early 70's and William is caught up in rock and roll and wants to make it big himself in music journalism. During his first official gig as a journo, he bumps into the Band Aids, played by Hudson, Paquin and Balk who are sexy, glamorous musicians muses who break hearts left right and center.

After a welcomed 'phone call from his editor at Rolling Stone magazine, William is told to follow the band Stillwater on tour for his first major piece of work. He isn't too welcomed by the band initially as they regard him with contempt for being press, but eventually he gains their friendships, smokes their dope and recouperates in 'Doris', the band's tour bus.

Great performances all round and should scoop up the awards like a fisherman's net. Francis McDormand just plays the mother to perfection, strong and powerful yet never going too far. Anyone who is thinking that Kate Hudon is riding off the success of her mother's fame should be ashamed of themself. Hudson, although at times too similar to Goldie for words, is much stronger, tougher and more in your face than Hawn has ever been on screen. Her talent is staring you in the face every moment she is on screen. This is a face to watch out for in the future and just watch the awards come rolling in. Well worth shelling out good money to see at the flicks, with a friend, partner or even by yourself, if you're that way inclined, Almost Famous is easily the best film so far this year A must see.
