REQUIEM
FOR A DREAM
Ellen Burstyn
Jared Leto
Jennifer Connolly
Requiem
for a Dream, in a nutshell, focuses on four peoples' descent
into lives of drugs and the consequences of their addictions.
Of course the actual film is far more complex, the depth into
which director, Darren Aronofsky, delves is truly fascinating.
Being
only Aronofsky's second directorial Requiem for a Dream combines
talented acting, innovative photography, stunning visuals
and an intense story line to produce an incredibly accomplished
piece.
The
film depicts parallel stories that are linked by the weak
relationship between the lonely widow Sara and her son Harry.
Sara's obsession with looking glamorous for an appearance
on a television quiz show promotes her addiction to diet pills,
and Harry's desire to create a utopia for himself and his
girlfriend drags him deeper into the danger of the drug baron
world.
Ellen
Burstyn looks set to win another Oscar for her amazingly disturbing
portrayal of Sara creating a character the audience feels
immense pity for. All the actors connect emotionally, providing
a rare spark, which adds to the brilliance of the movie.
Perhaps
waning a little in the middle, this is forgiven instantly
as a minor setback. Requiem for a Dream is a stunningly dark
and observant film. This is one to see only if you thought
Trainspotting was tame! Otherwise, it may prove to be too
disturbing, delving into themes including prostitution, drug
abuse, isolation and insanity. If you can stomach this deeply
emotional film, see it.
