GILLES PETERSON LIVE REVIEW

Regular readers of the Joy of Decks (that's me girlfriend and me mam) will know that my fave DJ, hero, and who I think I am at five thirty in the morning, pissed up behind a set of decks, is top BBC DJ, record label boss, A & R man, and eclectic supremeo Gilles Peterson.

Gilles was appearing at Traveller @ Scotland Yard in Newca**le on Saturday night, the day after the Orange Tour, the same day as JTQ were at Manor Quay, and the same time as I was supposed to be at work. Oh dear. First things first, bugger work.

Second, JTQ weren't on stage till half past ten, and Gilles not till twelve. Nice. So all it meant was that I didn't go too mental at the Orange Tour, skived work, booked a taxi eleven forty-five, and Roberts your fathers brother. But the best laid plans and all that. I knackered myself at Orange because Touché was too cool, JTQ didn't come on stage till eleven thirty, and I'm as about as popular as a fart in an astronaut suit at work. So was it worth it?

If anyone's not been to Traveller, which is at Scotland Yard, housed in the basement of RockShot's nightclub (and not in Rockshots like some dozy Coventry fool friends of mine found out - Cov fools - "you've got to let us in, we've come 200 miles to see Gilles Peterson". Rockshot's door staff - "You'd better try downstairs then, he's not actually on here…") it certainly is well worth a visit. Past DJs include the amazing Aphex Twin amongst others; however, you will pay for the privilege.

The entry fee to see Gilles was twelve pounds on the door (you didn't think I was organised enough to get tickets did you?), and if you get a round in you need your bank details, proof of ID, and a credit card in order to sort out the direct debit monthly payments. I'm scared to check how much I spent. Compare that with MQ's prices (only four quid in for Orange and dead cheap drinks too) and it can make for an expensive night out.
